Day 4

Titanic Belfast

For our last full day in Belfast, we finally made it out to the Titanic exhibit. Titanic Belfast is a museum dedicated to the Titanic (obviously) and it’s construction. To be honest, I didn’t actually know that the Titanic was built in Belfast. I thought the ship had just docked there. Since it had been recommended to us to go see, we went there.

The museum was quite interesting. Rather than focus solely on the ship, it gives a complete look at everything from the history of the region, to the company that funded the building of the ship, to various people who worked on/aboard the ship. Being a person who likes to read everything, it took me quite a while to get through it. Jeffry on the other hand finished much sooner than me (he’s not much of a reader). Once you go there, I think you’ll understand. Besides, we were also doing the kid’s activity sheet (we had to find various figures hidden throughout the exhibits).

SS Nomadic

When we were finally done, we had a quick bite to eat at the cafe there and then walked the length of the plot where the Titanic was actually constructed. You can see the lines where the ship was on the right side of the picture above.

Also included in the museum ticket was entrance to the SS Nomadic. It is the last surviving White Star Line Ship that famously transferred the first passengers aboard the Titanic. We didn’t really have a lot of time to see it, but since it was included in our ticket purchase, we made a quick trip inside. It is sort of like a mini Titanic. It was really nice and worth the time to go inside.

There wasn’t much else to do considering it was late in the afternoon AND a Sunday. So we just walked around and explored. Our journey took us through a housing complex just across from St. George’s Market where we once again found some beautiful wall murals. Some were memorials, while others were more political in nature.

Our last stop was a beautiful, gothic looking church, Saint Malachy’s. I guess we got there right after a mass as there were still a few people trickling out. We weren’t sure they were okay with us being there as they seemed a bit stand-offish when we were trying to go inside. Once we made it clear we were tourists and wanted to see the church as it looked beautiful, they were more than gracious. They gave us tips on what to look at and were very nice. The pastor even let us go up to the upper level so we could take better photos. It is an absolutely beautiful place. I highly recommend checking it out.

Saint Malachy’s

Dinner on this day was by far the worst we experienced there. We made the ill decision to try some fried chicken. We got it from a place called The Chip Company. We got their Chicken Special, which all things considered was a great deal. There was a lot of food, which would have been great had it been good. The breading was somewhat soggy, the sauces just weren’t flavourful, and overall it just wasn’t very pleasant. Needless to say we were quite disappointed. I’m sure other things there taste good, just not the chicken. Then again, we were basing our opinion on our American idea of what fried chicken should be like.

All in all, our final day in Belfast was lovely. The Titanic museum was interesting and worth a visit, as well as Saint Malachy’s. Just beware trying fried chicken 😉
